Getting to Cuenca

I have been to Quito although it was in the 70's, We are now interested in visiting Cuenca and are wondering if it would be a good idea to fly to Quito or Guayaquil and take a bus to Cuenca, or is it best to fly direct to Cuenca. The bus idea interests me as it would give us a feel for the peoples and the country as it is now and it also seems like it would be interesting in an adventurist experience. I would appreciate any thoughts or if any of you have taken this route. Thanks.
