Where to Move??

I posted about information on Lake Chapala. Now people are telling me I should also look at Puerto Vallarta. I am single female so I am concerned about safety. People in the US are saying the drive from Lake Chapala to Guadalajara is unsafe for Americans. Any thoughts? also about cost of living in Puerto Vallarta?
