Hello everyone, my wife and I are planning to move down to Mexico from San Diego in the next few years. Areas we are considering are Cancun/Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta and Chelem/Progreso . Since we don't have mosquitos here in SD, the little knowledge I have of them is when I visit these parts of Mexico. Hopefully you can pass along some first hand experience.
First, how do you deal with the mosquitos? Are you resigned to slather yourselves with repellent all the time? I've heard that eating certain foods can make you less attractive to the pests, does that actually work in practice? Maybe you just get used to being ravaged and it is not a problem?
Next, we have been to all the places we are considering except the Chelem/Progreso area where we plan to check out later this year. Being on the Gulf side, are mosquitos an issue there?
