Driving in Mexico

I have driven in a few small towns in Mexico and the streets seems to be fairly well maintained. How what are the conditions of the roads between towns and how are the highways between states states in Mexico? I have heard that the major highways are very well maintained and make traveling by car or bus quick and efficient. How do expiates feel about driving in Mexico and what experiences (good or bad) have they had? What things would expiates recommend that people do or not do while driving in Mexico?
