Newbie questions

Hello to all, my wife & I came to NZ to retire in April, however have found it very expensive and are considering relocating to the Philippines, our UK pension gives us around US$1200-$1400 per month, plus I run a small online business that makes us a bit extra.
We feel we would like to visit first to get a feel for the place & the cheapest way seems to book a package deal, does anyone know, if we did that & whilst there decided to stay, could we just extend our visitors visa from there or would we have to return to NZ & apply here?
We understand there is a 3 year long stay visa, if so how would we go about getting that, although we feel that if we were happy there, after a few months we would apply for the retirement resident plan, any info on that would be great.
Sorry for the long first post, did not expect to be doing all this again :-) Thanks.
