Applying for Social Security - Federal Benefits Unit

I am curious to find out if any of you have had experiences with the Federal Benefits Unit ?

As you already know, an expat is not permitted to open a “MySocialSecurity” account. Therefore, we can not apply online. I am very concerned about what happens if the FBU is non-responsive due to staffing issues, etc.
