Trying for one year

Greetings!
I just left a note to the larger Expat community on this topic. The whole story is that we want a year in England's lake district to really get to know the community there, specifically Ambleside and Keswick. We'd like to rent but can only stay six months without a visa as US citizens. Is it possible to leave at the end of six months, stay in the US for a week or month and then return for another six months?
