Hello All - Just a little feedback on some of your queries about living and working in Algeria. I am not only Australian, but also female and work in southern Algeria (3500 km from Algiers).
Personally, I find the food is fine, as it is what I eat at home, but if your prefer steak, eggs chips, salad and a full breakfast, you may struggle at times...
Algeria has the most restricitive Visa requirements in the world and is extremely security concious. For Australians, full Visa details, forms and information, is available from: www.algeriaemb.org.au
Be aware that whilst many people cannot speak English (or choose not to), there are many who can understand you, if you use 'Proper English' and speak clearly - do not use Australian terminology...
Outside of Algiers, French is not the first language of choice - Arabic will be of more use.
If you are visiting Algeria as an expate, be considerate of cultural differences. To obtain further information for non-Australians, contact your Department of Foreign affairs and ask for contact details of a Expat social club in Algeria.
Above all, enjoy the experience - it is different, but culturally interesting.
