Expat Advice: Relationships in Ascuncion, Paraguay
What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?
Ascuncion
If you do not have children, do you generally spend your social time with other expat couples? If not, what else do you like to do as a couple?
In contrast to Lebanon, Asuncion, Paraguay, is all about kids. Everyone in the embassy community has kids (young or grown). Social life revolves around the kids, which leaves my husband and I out because we don't have kids. Every time we meet someone new (national or American), the second question out of their mouth is, "Do you have kids?." When we say no, their response is, "oh, not yet" and I can tell they have little interest in furthering the relationship. Maybe I should start saying, "no, since The Accident that won't be happening). My husband re-started the hash house harriers (drinking group with a running problem) as a way to meet and mingle with adults. Plus, we thought it would be a great treat for the parents to have something for adults only to do every other Saturday. At a couple of hashes, there may have been more kids than adults! Then we ran into the issue of what to do with nannies.
