By Joshua Wood, LPC

Last updated on Mar 02, 2024

Summary: People describe life in Paraguay as relaxed and laid-back. Expats love the low cost of living, the friendly people, the beautiful scenery, and the relaxed pace of life. The average cost of living for an expat is around $1,000 per month. The population of Paraguay is approximately 7 million people. The largest cities in Paraguay are Asunción (the capital), Ciudad del Este, San Lorenzo, Capiatá, and Lambaré. The cons of living in Paraguay include the lack of infrastructure, the high levels of poverty, and the high levels of crime. Additionally, the healthcare system is not as advanced as in other countries, and the public transportation system is limited.

What do I need to know about living in Paraguay?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Paraguay, they said:

"Before retiring in Paraguay, expats should be aware of the language barrier, as Spanish is the official language. It is also important to research the cost of living in Paraguay, as it is generally lower than in other countries. Additionally, expats should be aware of the climate in Paraguay, as it is generally hot and humid. It is also important to research the healthcare system in Paraguay, as it may not be up to the same standards as in other countries. Finally, expats should be aware of the visa requirements for living in Paraguay, as they may need to apply for a residency visa," said one expat in Paraguay.
