Parent's Review of American School of Brasilia in Brasilia, Brazil

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

American School of Brasilia

In what town or city is this school located?

Brasilia

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

American Curriculum with AP program

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Pre-K through 12

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

Embassy buses, parents and drivers. Most students do not live near the school.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

The school doesn't have a modern, polished facility, but it did just complete an Arts Center (opening in November) that will house the music program, drama and art. It is a beautiful structure. The academic program is strong, and class sizes remain small (usually 15-20) which gives the student a sense of belonging. The athletic program in the high school and middle school is open to all; there are academic-related and community service activities for older kids, too. For younger children, the Club EAB offers activities as varied as fencing, chess, ballet and caipoaira.

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

An orientation is provided for all new students.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

PTSO is fairly active, but mainly run by parents of international students. A once-a-month coffee is sponsored by PTSO. Many school events (art shows, plays, Global Awareness fair, Book Fair) encourage parents to get involved.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

While this school can't brag about its infrastructure, it does have a sense of community. The Brasilians welcome the international kids and seem to mix well. The school recently voted to move from an association-controlled format to a Board of Trustees format.
