Parent's Review of Sri Utama International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)

Sri Utama International School

In what town or city is this school located?

Kuala Lumpur

How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)

Supposedly British with 99.9% local influence

What grade levels are represented at this school?

Nursery to IGCSE

How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)

All kinds of transport. Some of the buses provided at this school to specific locations are horrible. (e.g Sentul, Ampang). Might as well not have an air-conditioning as it only gives out hot air.

How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?

School size is alright but lacking in facilities like proper classroom furniture, proper extra-curricular activities hall and proper modern training aids. Best of all the school lacks proper and qualified teachers for international students! Many have no experience in dealing with different cultures. They expect all students to behave like Malaysians, and refuse to understand and accept differences in opinions and certain behaviours. Students who voice out opinions are put down and viewed as rude. Obviously, these teachers have not been trained in teaching methodolgies and social theories from established educationists.Although there are times when a good teacher comes along but they will resign after teaching for a term. This is because their management and administration is terrible! Preparing of documents are not done in advance and parents have to inform them before they get things done. Have the tendency of wasting your time in the office. Not to mention there are prayer times for muslims students where the non-muslims students are expected sit out for 30 minutes of doing nothing!

What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?

The students just have to adapt on their own. No briefing about what the parents and students can look forward to. Also, students who couldn't communicate well in English are usually cast out and sometimes even bullied.

How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?

Not available at all. Parents have problems getting their voices heard. Any complaints or suggestions seem to be unacknowledged. The school so far NEVER gets back to parents' complaints or suggestions. The parents have to keep calling them until actions are taken place! Having a Parent Teacher's Meeting once every term is NOT getting our voices heard. This school does all sorts of events to show that they're a prestigious school but it is all a bunch of crap.

What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?

If you want to experience the local school atmosphere and you are looking for a way to waste your money, well, this is the IDEAL place. I highly doubt most of the fees paid are used to improve education for the student. All the money seems to be sucked by the owners themselves. Also some teachers are Malaysians who can't even speak proper English - how can that be international, I wonder? Well, may be just the students are from various countries. Other than that, parents should do a lot of 'homework' before enrolling their children to this "Forever Backward, Always Behind" school.
