An Expat Talks about What is Was Like Having a Baby in Hong Kong, Hong Kong

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Hong Kong

How recently did you give birth in the country that you are reporting on?

2005

Describe your experience giving birth there. What type of facility did you go to? What (if any) type of pain management did you use? How long did you stay in the hospital? Was it a positive experience? Etc...

I hired a midwife from the U.S. to do a home birth for me. We paid for her airfare and $3000 . She stayed in our apartment with us and was there when I went into labor. We had a beautiful, uncomplicated labor and delivery and it was wonderful to not have to leave our apartment! We did have a back up plan and had met with an OB in HK, just in case.

How did you choose your doctor, midwife or other type of medical professional?

I found the midwife on the internet by searching for "international midwife". I checked with her references and she was everything we expected and more!

If you were to have another child in this country, would you do anything differently in terms of preparation and/or the delivery?

Absolutely not, and in fact we plan on having the same midwife come back next year for our second baby!

If a friend of yours living in the same country were expecting a baby, what advice would you give her?

If you are comfortable with having a home birth, find a midwife to come to you. Have a back up plan, but plan on the best experience of your life!
