Expat Advice: Culture Shock in Nice, France, France

Submitted by ResearchTeam

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Nice, France

What are the most challenging aspects of the new culture?

Many expats in Nice find it challenging to adjust to the slower pace of life. The locals tend to move at a leisurely pace in a relaxed and laid-back manner, which can be particularly frustrating for those from cultures that value a faster pace and more productivity. Additionally, the overall lack of formality in social interactions can be difficult to adjust to; locals in Nice prefer casual encounters and don't stand on ceremony in the way folks from other parts of the world might. Finally, the sociolinguistic aspects of the language can be difficult; the local language, Provencal, and other romantic languages with their own distinct dialects are spoken rather than the French of Paris.
