Getting a Driver's License in Hong Kong

However, after this period, they must obtain a Hong Kong driving license. The requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region within Hong Kong, as it is a Special Administrative Region with a uniform driving license policy.
Requirements for Obtaining a Hong Kong Driving License
To obtain a Hong Kong driving license, foreigners need to fulfill the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a valid overseas driving license
- Have a valid Hong Kong Identity Card (HKID)
- Pass the driving test (if the overseas license is not from certain exempted countries)
Process for Obtaining a Hong Kong Driving License
The process for obtaining a Hong Kong driving license is as follows:
- Application: Obtain an application form from the Hong Kong Licensing Office or download it from the Transport Department's website. Complete the form and submit it with the required documents, including a copy of your HKID, overseas driving license, and passport.
- Exemption Check: The Transport Department will check if your overseas license is from a country exempted from the driving test. If yes, you will be exempted from the driving test. If not, you will need to take and pass the driving test.
- Driving Test Booking: If you are required to take the driving test, book an appointment with one of the approved driving schools or the Driving Test Appointment Office.
- Driving Test: Take and pass the driving test, which consists of a written test and a road test. The written test is available in English, Chinese, and other languages. The road test assesses your driving skills and knowledge of Hong Kong's traffic regulations.
- License Issuance: After passing the driving test, you can apply for your Hong Kong driving license at the Licensing Office. You will need to submit your pass certificate, HKID, and the required fee.
- License Collection: Collect your Hong Kong driving license at the Licensing Office. Your license will be valid for 10 years, after which you will need to renew it.
