Driving in Discovery Bay

Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Discovery Bay.

1. No Private Cars Allowed

Discovery Bay is a unique area in Hong Kong where private cars are not allowed. The area is designed to be a pedestrian-friendly, low-pollution environment. Therefore, you won’t be able to drive your own car in Discovery Bay. Instead, the area is served by a comprehensive public transportation system, including buses, ferries, and a private hire car service.

2. Use of Public Transportation

As private cars are not allowed, you will need to rely on public transportation. The bus system is extensive and can take you to most places within Discovery Bay. There are also regular ferries to Central Hong Kong. For more convenience, you can use the private hire car service, which operates 24/7.

3. No Need for a Driver’s License

Since you won’t be driving in Discovery Bay, you won’t need a Hong Kong driver’s license. However, if you plan to drive in other parts of Hong Kong, you can use an international driver’s license for up to 12 months. After that, you will need to obtain a Hong Kong driver’s license.

4. Getting a Hong Kong Driver’s License

If you wish to drive in other parts of Hong Kong, you will need to get a local driver’s license. If you hold a full driver’s license from a recognized country, you can apply for a direct issue of a Hong Kong driving license without a test. You will need to fill out an application form, provide your overseas driving license, and pay a fee.

5. Parking in Other Parts of Hong Kong

While you won’t need to worry about parking in Discovery Bay, parking in other parts of Hong Kong can be challenging. Spaces are limited and can be expensive. It’s recommended to use public transportation as much as possible.
