Phrae is a historic city located in northern Thailand, serving as the capital of Phrae Province. The city is known for its well-preserved traditional Thai architecture and cultural heritage, featuring numerous temples and historical sites that reflect its significance during the Lanna Kingdom period. Phrae has maintained much of its old-world charm with wooden houses, narrow streets, and a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts with Thailand's more touristy destinations. The city is an important center for silk production and woodcarving, traditional crafts that have been practiced in the region for centuries. Phrae's economy is primarily based on agriculture, particularly rice farming in the surrounding plains, along with small-scale manufacturing and trade. The city serves as a gateway to exploring northern Thailand's cultural landscape and offers visitors an authentic glimpse into provincial Thai life. Despite its historical importance, Phrae remains relatively underdeveloped compared to major Thai cities, with limited modern infrastructure but growing tourism interest among travelers seeking authentic experiences away from crowded tourist centers.
