Hallstatt clings to the eastern shore of the Hallstätter See, a glacial lake in Austria's Salzkammergut region, with a population of around 750 people who live among pastel-colored townhouses stacked almost vertically against limestone cliffs. The town's identity is inseparable from salt—for over 3,000 years, miners have extracted it from the mountains above, making Hallstatt one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited settlements and the namesake of an entire Iron Age archaeological period. The main street runs along the waterfront, narrow enough that cars barely fit, lined with baroque and Renaissance facades reflected in the lake's still water. Narrow alleyways climb steeply between buildings, connecting the lakeside to the upper town and the salt mines beyond. The surrounding landscape is dramatic: forested mountains rise sharply from the water, and hiking trails crisscross the region. Tourism has transformed Hallstatt in recent decades—it now draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, particularly from Asia, making it one of Austria's most photographed locations. This influx has brought restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops, though the core character of a working Alpine village persists beneath the crowds. Winter brings snow and quiet; summer brings boats, tour groups, and a palpable tension between preservation and commerce.
