Sofia has been Bulgaria's capital since 1879, and today it's a sprawling city of roughly 1.2 million people where Ottoman mosques stand a few blocks from Soviet-era apartment blocks and sleek glass office towers. The city sits in a valley ringed by mountains—Vitosha to the south dominates the skyline—and was originally settled by Thracians, then Romans (who called it Serdica), then Byzantines, then Ottomans for nearly 500 years. Walking through the center, you move between eras: the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, an enormous gold-domed Orthodox basilica completed in 1912, anchors the skyline; the Banya Bashi Mosque, still functioning, dates to the 16th century; the National Palace of Culture is a brutalist monument from the 1980s. The city has a working-class and intellectual character—university students and artists cluster in neighborhoods like Lozenets and Studentski Grad, while the downtown core around Vitosha Boulevard pulses with cafes, galleries, and small shops. Sofia's infrastructure is uneven: some streets are beautifully maintained, others potholed; public transport is cheap and extensive but aging. The city is not a tourist theme park—it feels lived-in, sometimes rough around the edges, with a dry humor and a pace that's neither frantic nor sleepy.
