Wetzlar is a medieval town in Hesse, Germany, built dramatically around a bend in the Lahn River, with a skyline dominated by the incomplete Gothic cathedral that has defined the town since the 13th century. The old town clusters on steep hillsides with narrow winding streets, half-timbered houses, and stone bridges that feel frozen in time—yet Wetzlar is no museum piece. It's an optical industry hub; the precision lens and camera manufacturing heritage runs deep here, and that technical tradition still shapes the local economy and character. The town sits roughly between Frankfurt and Cologne, making it accessible but genuinely off the main tourist circuit. The Lahn Valley surrounding it is forested and green, popular with hikers and cyclists following the river trails. Wetzlar's population hovers around 50,000, large enough to have real services and cultural offerings—theaters, galleries, restaurants—but small enough that you can walk the historic core in an afternoon. The mix is distinctly German provincial: serious about craftsmanship and quality, with a quiet pride in local identity rather than flashiness.
