The town's fortifications date back to the Middle Ages, and its layout—with narrow cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and a complete ring of defensive walls—remains virtually unchanged from the 16th century. The Marktplatz sits at the heart of town, anchored by the Gothic Town Hall and the Church of St. James, which houses a famous wooden altarpiece. Walking the town walls offers views across the Tauber Valley and the surrounding Franconian countryside. Beyond the medieval core, Rothenburg has adapted to modern tourism while maintaining its character: there are restaurants, cafes, and shops catering to the roughly two million visitors who pass through annually, yet the atmosphere remains that of a small Bavarian town rather than a theme park. The surrounding region is known for wine production and hiking, with the Romantic Road—a scenic driving route through southern Germany—passing directly through town.
