Amersfoort's 65-meter Dom Tower has dominated the skyline since 1534, a vertical anchor that still defines how locals navigate their medieval core. This Utrecht province city grew wealthy on trade during the Middle Ages, and that prosperity left behind a dense network of canals, gabled houses, and hidden courtyards that reward wandering on foot. The old town wraps around the tower in concentric rings—narrow brick streets give way to broader squares where markets still operate much as they did centuries ago. Beyond heritage, Amersfoort functions as a genuine living city: the train station connects directly to Amsterdam (30 minutes), Utrecht (15 minutes), and beyond, making it a practical base for commuters and a draw for young professionals. Cycling infrastructure rivals any Dutch city, with dedicated paths threading through residential neighborhoods and out toward the surrounding countryside. The cultural calendar stays active year-round with exhibitions, theater, and street markets. Parks and green corridors—including the Amerongse Polder to the south—provide breathing room and weekend escape routes without leaving the city limits.
