Weather: Wassenaar has a temperate maritime climate, with cool summers, mild winters, and changeable weather shaped by the North Sea. Wind and cloud are common, but so are bright, fresh days, especially along the dunes.

On a clear day, the light off the North Sea reaches Wassenaar before you do: through dune grass, past clipped hedges and long lanes, the town feels half garden suburb, half coastal escape. Just north of The Hague, it sits in one of the most affluent corners of the Netherlands, where embassies, villas, and quiet residential streets give way to estates, woodland, and stretches of protected dune landscape. The pace is measured. Cyclists move easily between neighborhoods and country roads, and the center is compact enough to feel local rather than metropolitan, with shops, cafes, and services serving residents more than day-trippers. Wassenaar is also known for its green setting, with large estates and open spaces that make it feel unusually spacious for a place so close to a major city. The nearby coast shapes daily life even when the beach is not the main destination: sea air, dunes, and flat light are part of the atmosphere. It is the kind of place where people come for privacy, greenery, and access to The Hague rather than for nightlife or spectacle. That combination gives Wassenaar a distinctly residential character, but one softened by landscape, water, and the easy reach of the Dutch coast.
