Noordwijk emerged in the 17th century as a fishing village along the North Sea coast, gradually transforming into a fashionable seaside destination by the late 1800s. Today it remains a working beach town where fishing heritage coexists with modern tourism infrastructure. The wide sandy beaches draw swimmers and windsurfers, while the promenade lined with cafes and restaurants reflects both its past as a retreat for Dutch nobility and its present identity as an accessible coastal escape. Noordwijk's position on the Holland Coast places it within easy reach of Amsterdam and other major cities, making it equally popular with day-trippers and longer-stay visitors. The town maintains a relaxed, unpretentious character—less polished than some Dutch coastal resorts but genuine in its appeal. Dune landscapes frame the shoreline, and the nearby Keukenhof gardens (when in season) draw additional visitors to the region. The local economy balances tourism with agriculture, particularly flower cultivation in the surrounding bulb fields that define the landscape inland.
