Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Egypt.
Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Egypt.
Foreigners who wish to legally drive in Egypt can do so with a valid international driving permit (IDP) for up to six months. After this period, they are required to obtain an Egyptian driving license. The requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region.
Requirements for Obtaining an Egyptian Driving License
Here is a detailed process for obtaining an Egyptian driving license:
Translation: Have your valid driving license from your home country translated into Arabic. This can be done through a certified translation office or your embassy in Egypt.
Eye Test: Undergo an eye test at an authorized optician or clinic. The results should be documented on the clinic's letterhead.
Traffic Department: Visit the Traffic Department (Mudiriyat Al Moroor) with the following documents:
- Original passport and a copy
- Valid residence visa
- Original driving license and a copy
- Translation of the driving license
- Eye test results
- Two passport-sized photographs
You will need to fill out an application form at the Traffic Department.
Driving Test: You may be required to take a practical driving test, depending on the specific regulations at the time and the discretion of the Traffic Department.
Fees: Pay the required fees for issuing the Egyptian driving license. The fees may vary, so it's best to confirm the current fees at the Traffic Department.
Collection: After processing, you will be given a date to collect your Egyptian driving license. You will need to present your receipt and any other required documents upon collection.
It is always a good idea to check with the local Traffic Department or your embassy for any updates or changes in the process. Safe driving!
