Driving in Daugavpils

3. Parking in Daugavpils
Finding parking in Daugavpils is not usually a problem. There are plenty of parking lots and spaces available, especially in the city center. However, during peak hours, it might take some time to find a spot. Parking fees are relatively affordable compared to other European cities.
4. Driving with an International License
Foreigners can drive in Latvia with an international driving permit (IDP) along with their valid home country's driving license. This is allowed for up to six months from the date of entry into Latvia. After this period, you will need to obtain a Latvian driving license.
5. Obtaining a Latvian Driving License
To get a Latvian driving license, you will need to pass a theory test and a practical driving test. The theory test is available in English. However, the practical test is usually conducted in Latvian, so you might need an interpreter. You will also need to provide a medical certificate proving you are fit to drive. It's recommended to take a few driving lessons to familiarize yourself with the local driving rules and conditions.
6. Winter Driving
Winters in Latvia can be harsh with heavy snowfall and icy roads. It's mandatory to use winter tires from December 1st to March 1st. Always keep a snow brush, ice scraper, and a shovel in your car. Also, be prepared for reduced visibility and longer braking distances.
7. Speed Limits and Traffic Rules
Always adhere to the speed limits, which are usually 50 km/h in urban areas, 90 km/h on open roads, and 110 km/h on highways. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and the use of mobile phones while driving is prohibited unless you have a hands-free system. Also, remember that the legal alcohol limit is 0.05%.
