Just buying a small business isn't that easy in Fiji for non locals. InvestmentFiji is gov agency that helps foreign investors and their website has wealth of info.

Many industries are protected or restricted to locals including retail. Also to get approvals you will need to show you are bringing in overseas funds.

Also most small retail businesses provide much income other than to take care if households at very low income level. Also if importing from overseas it is very expensive due to shipping and high import duties, excise tax, plus vat.

Life is simple in Fiji but also expensive. Many expats come with employers on well paid high skilled jobs.

What type of business are you looking at?

You asked Nadi vs Suva. Two totally different places. If your market is tourism Nadi is your market. If your market is locals the largest enjoyment area is Suva. Nadi is hot and sunny where as Suva is bit cooler but rains a lot...

Restaurants are one of few non protected industries, But you will find that tough way to make it n Fiji. Go to Investment Fiji as they can get you info on all the hoops you need to even invest in Fiji. Best if luck.

Thanks for the quick reply, I did write to Investment Fiji a few weeks ago but have not received a reply yet,
A restaurant is just a means to bring in a steady income which will give us security,
I am also aware of the plight of some people who have had to move to "poor areas" of Fiji, and my long-term plan is to try and create small businesses that families in these areas can work together on to generate much-needed income.
I will try Investment Fiji again and see what happens
Thanks again for your advice,
