Looking for some suggestions on where to live for 6 months in New Zealand. My wife and I are thinking of trying to spend 6 months every year in NZ as part of our retirement, I have been there 3 times and my wife once. This November we are spending the whole month in NZ researching towns that might work for us. We ‘average’ mid-50’s and are pretty active – runners, swimmers, go to the gym. Currently we live at the beach and are not looking to live in a city (Auckland, Wellington), we would like though restaurants, bars, etc. Possibly towns no bigger than 40,000. Budget for rental up to 3000NZD?
I realize this is a fairly broad subject. I have researched the Visa requirements and know this info.
Any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Try Whanganui, great coffee culture, museums, restaurants, walking trails, River at it's centre, several gyms, lots of places to run...i can't run anymore but wish I could. I assume you mean $3000 a month (most rents are by the week, so that would be about $750. You might think about buying and reselling...lots of beautiful homes here at 1/4 the cost of Welly or Auckland. I came here 22 years ago and feel i was very luck to have landed in Whanganui/Wanganui. (I had lived in Chicago, Oneonta,NY, Ann Arbor, Charlotte, NC and Claremont,CA) I know if several Michiganders who come here every Michigan winter.

Thanks for your comment. Haven't really considered the west side of the N.I. until now.

Picton- top of the South Island! We were thinking the same thing as you but the exorbitant housing costs swayed us! Continuing retirement in Thailand! Picton had a wonderful feel on our recent trip!

Hi, Sort of a similar question. I am an Aussie looking to move to NZ for retirement. Single, undemanding, very reasonable, not interested in any luxuries, dining out, shopping, etc. Love gardening and dogs - must have when in NZ. Prepared to spend ~ $1K on renting that allows both. Want to volunteer work at animal shelter/rescue in neighborhood. Very good handyman, can fix and give 2nd life to almost anything. Looking at Dunedin or Christchurch which ever is more affordable. Will be ready to move in early 2019. Where do I start? cheers

Realize I'm quite late replying. Look north of Whangarei for exceptional weather and ocean/surf. Otherwise, Nelson and surrounds. Both are exceptionally beautiful with Nelson being more vibrant.
