I've seen ads for apartments where 50,000 RUB per month looks like the cheapest available. Yet this is more than double what teachers seem to make. Nevermind all one's others expenses. What am I missing?

Maybe if you want a place in the center with all the amenities. Hell you can likely find something on airbnb for 50k a month.

Thank you. Could you point me to a source of what might be considered more modest accommodation? What might be an average 1-bedroom amount? Thanks.

You're likely not going to like the condition of accommodations but here you go. https://www.cian.ru/snyat-2-komnatnuyu-kvartiru/
I paid 55k pre crisis 2013 for a 1 bedroom decent remont near chisti prdyi.

I'm still confused. From what I've read, 16,000 RUB per month is considered an average teaching salary in Russia. From what I've seen so far, the cheapest 1 bedroom in St. P is more than that. I keep getting the feeling I'm not understanding something.

Look for ads within 25-50 km from the center where there are electric trains! There rent housing will cost between 15-20 thousand rubles

I'm back again to my point: from everything I've read now, the average monthly teacher salary is roughly equal to cheap rent. Are teachers begging in the streets? What am I missing?

I don't live in Russia presently but do have a number of relatives and friends who do. To answer your question. All of them either purchased their flat. Or share the cost, either by as my stepson does, he pays associated flat costs and his girlfriend pays other expenses. Others have roommates to split the cost. Living in Russia is difficult at best. There are no regulations regarding when you will get paid, it may be next week, next month or in 6 months. In my family there are three flats that are owned (1 each 1 room, 2 room and 3 room) and based on need they switch flats to fit family size.

Excellent answer; thank you. I understand the low salaries, but the rental prices are not proportionately lower. This must cause a great deal of social tension!

Yes it's my decision, but thank you anyway for reminding me of that. And thank you for your contributions to this thread.
