Matagalpa - Internet.

Post New Topic

Hi. Expat in Antigua, Guatemala. I will be coming for a visit in a few weeks to Matagalpa.

Thinking of renting a house for a year and will check into that.

I am wondering about internet hook up there? Can I get reliable internet of 5 - 10 mbs? Will need that for some business I do remotely.

Answers appreciated in advance.

I like Matagalpa enough that I've visited repeatedly over several years, but I've never personally subscribed to an internet service there. But I know quality reception is available because it has always been just fine at a spick-and-span hotel I recommend called La Profe -- possibly the nicest hotel in the Western Hemisphere if you limit your search to those located in the neighborhood around a bus station. ~$10US per night. Get one of the ground floor rooms that open on the interior garden, down the hall from the perfectly adequate kitchen, and ask who their internet provider is.

It really depends on the location of your house. I live 2 blocks from the main cathedral and I have Claro DSL at 10 Mbps reliably. Claro does offer cable and fiber optic at higher speeds but only in specific locals in the city. Yota is a new wireless service in town offering up to 12 Mbps. I don't know how consistent the speeds are though. There is also IBW internet via antenna but I think it maxes out at about 5 Mbps.

Thanks.

That's positive and will also look into the hotel.

Here in Antigua, still kind of spotty internet service. I've managed to get good 10mbps but needed to buy the cable and have it installed privately so there was quality cable off the main line.

Thanks again!

Yes, sounds doable for me and just restricts where I'll rent.

Same situation in Antigua. Not a lot of investment in infastructure so depends where you are living in the city or outside of it.
