the political violence is targeted and so far does not involve tourists or expats. Police, who didn;t do much to begin with, have been diverted to political duties so there is not much of a presence like before except when they go in big groups for some reason. Dantos are often seen where you used to see the beat cop. Mind your own business and avoid them.

Crime is a little worse. You hear a lot of rumors but unless you know the players personally it does pay to worry about it. My only change is to travel less in the countryside or go in a group. For years I have not walked downtown at night so that is no change. None of my Nica relatives have been robbed lately.

If you follow the "normal people rule", don't look particularly stupid, and get off the streets after dark you should be OK. If it implodes there will be a lot of people hiding in hotels waiting for the first flight out, most of them Nicas.

I was only in Leon a couple of days. I didn't see anything during the day that made me nervous.

No one bothered us at night either, there were two of us and the guy I was with doesn't ever get bothered.

My experience both pre and post coup is that Nic's epidemic crime involves poor Nicas on foot and living in shabby houses. Tourists and expats in vehicles and more secure housing are not particularly bothered.
One negative of the current situation is the gun stores have been close since last year so any crook with a brain will know that nubbies are disarmed and can rely only on machetes and sharp sticks.
