If there is any information you can share with others about how you and people in your area are preparing for the hurricane: evacuations, shelters and where to get supplies, please post it here. Here's the latest advisory: http://www.sinapred.gob.ni/

The US Embassy posted this:

Important message to U.S. Citizens: Weather Alert (November 2, 2020)
The Nicaraguan disaster management agency (SINAPRED) has issued a yellow warning for the northern Caribbean coast due to Hurricane Eta, which is expected to make landfall early November 3. Hurricane Eta is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 inches over Nicaragua. These rainfall amounts can produce life-threatening flash flooding and landslides. In addition, a dangerous storm surge is expected along the coast of Nicaragua, raising water levels by as much as 10 to 15 feet above normal tide levels.
Actions to Take:
- Monitor the progress of this storm system as its trajectory could change suddenly; additional watches or warnings are likely to be issued.
- All U.S. citizens should ensure that they have adequate food, water, fuel and prescription medications on hand at all times as part of their standard emergency preparedness plan.
- For more information or to monitor the development of this system, please visit the National Hurricane Center website at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/, and follow the advice of local authorities as provided on the SINAPRED website: http://www.sinapred.gob.ni/

Busy buying food, recharging batteries, putting priority things in days packs, and filling sandbags.

Other than that, all normal.

Estimate eta of Eta is 8 am with 150mph winds on the coast with corresponding storm surge. Not much will hold up to that beating. Rest of country, especially in the north, will get heavy rains later in the week with severe flooding and landslides. Crop and infrastructure damage will be horrible.

Not much to talk about till it happens.

The greatest punch to the stomach will be at the N. Eastern shores. Not much will likely be left standing. The government has already sent a fleet of trucks filed with food staples, sent in support troops to secure utilities and the peace and evacuated most of the population to high grounds. (a lot more than you can say of Bush in New Orleans or Trump's paper towels and playdough in Puerto Rico). Road closures are of the greatest concern to all in the North as predictable mudslides will close off main connection roads for food delivery and emergency services that could last into weeks to come. The unpredictable is the winds. If they remain high into the inland many other problems can come about. I reinforced our water tank this summer so winds might not take it down into the garage and neighbors house. Our new roof would hopefully survive high winds and rain...but all is a mystery until it happens. Frozen and canned foods, gas tanks full, water bottled, candles, flashlights, radio batteries and a good book stand by. But it is Nicaragua...we survive even the forces of capitalist imperial invasions, corona viruses, and God-given natural disasters.

Loved reading your post johnchip, especially this phrase "...but all is a mystery until it happens".
Isn't this so true in all areas of life!?! Hoping for safety and quick recovery for all who are affected. It's good to be as "ready" as possible.

This was the capitalist invasion in 2007 after Felix.

.......

Felix and ETA have much in common, to the point that it looks like ETA will cross back in the Carib and head north to Florida, At least that is what NOAA is predicting.

....

Felix went north after devastating Puerto Cabezas and wound up at Naples, Florida,

........

Whether the Air Calvary will come roaring in this time is anyone's guess. Perhaps the Nicaraguan government will be sufficient. The roads were poor to begin with, and are certainly not much better. Much of the commerce was conducted over open water along the cost.

.......

They will need assets like the attachment to reach the remote villages.

How are you doing after the hurricane?

In Carazo (S.W. NI) we had 3 days of rain....The wind is ALWAYS from the east, so our trees are well rooted for east winds.....the counterclockwise twist of ETA gave us north winds which downed some tall flowers & tipped one potted plant......nada mas.....but I expect some downed trees.......Temperature down to 24C......Nice.......H2O 212F
