What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Arusha?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Arusha about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"There are so many what if's when having a baby in a third world country... I would tell my friend that she needs to be confident in her decision and that her and her spouse should agree on it, because whichever decision they make, they are going to have to not have any regrets if the what if's come true," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Arusha, Tanzania.

"1. Research and choose a reputable hospital or clinic: Before having a baby in Arusha, it's essential to research and select a reputable hospital or clinic that offers maternity services. You can ask for recommendations from fellow expats, local friends, or online forums. 2. Find a trusted obstetrician/gynecologist: It's crucial to find a trusted obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) who can guide you through your pregnancy and delivery. You can ask for recommendations from your chosen hospital or clinic, or from fellow expats who have had babies in Arusha. 3. Familiarize yourself with local customs and practices: It's essential to familiarize yourself with local customs and practices related to pregnancy and childbirth in Tanzania. This will help you understand what to expect during your pregnancy and delivery, and ensure that you are prepared for any cultural differences. 4. Attend prenatal classes: Prenatal classes can help you prepare for childbirth and parenthood. They can also be a great way to meet other expectant parents in Arusha. Ask your OB/GYN or hospital for recommendations on where to attend prenatal classes. 5. Arrange for health insurance: Make sure you have adequate health insurance coverage for your pregnancy and delivery. This may involve purchasing additional coverage or ensuring that your current policy covers maternity care in Tanzania. 6. Prepare for the unexpected: Be prepared for any unexpected situations that may arise during your pregnancy or delivery. This may include having an emergency plan in place, knowing the location of the nearest hospital, and having a list of emergency contacts. 7. Learn some Swahili: While many healthcare professionals in Arusha speak English, it can be helpful to learn some basic Swahili phrases related to pregnancy and childbirth. This can help you communicate more effectively with your healthcare providers and feel more comfortable during your pregnancy and delivery. 8. Connect with other expat parents: Join expat groups or online forums to connect with other expat parents in Arusha. This can provide valuable support and advice during your pregnancy and after your baby is born. 9. Plan for postnatal care: After your baby is born, you'll need to arrange for postnatal care, including vaccinations and check-ups. Make sure you know where to access these services and have a plan in place. 10. Enjoy the experience: Having a baby in a foreign country can be both challenging and rewarding. Embrace the experience and enjoy the unique opportunity to bring a new life into the world in Arusha," commented one expat who made the move to Arusha, Tanzania.
