What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Orkney Islands?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Orkney Islands about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to register with a local GP as soon as you arrive in Orkney Islands. The healthcare system in Scotland is excellent and you will have access to a range of prenatal and postnatal services. You should also familiarize yourself with the maternity benefits and rights in Scotland. As an expat, you may be entitled to certain benefits and it's important to understand what these are. If you're planning to give birth in a hospital, the nearest one is in Kirkwall. It's a good idea to visit the hospital beforehand to familiarize yourself with the facilities and understand the process. Consider hiring a doula or midwife for additional support during pregnancy and childbirth. They can provide valuable advice and assistance, especially if you're far from your home country and family. Join local parenting groups or forums. This can be a great way to meet other parents, share experiences, and get advice. Learn about the local customs and traditions related to childbirth and parenting. This can help you integrate into the local community and understand what to expect. Finally, make sure you have all the necessary documents for your baby, such as a birth certificate and passport. This can take some time, so it's best to start the process as soon as possible," explained one expat living in Orkney Islands, Scotland.
