What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Potsdam?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Potsdam about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the German healthcare system. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by statutory health insurance in Germany, so make sure you have the necessary coverage. Secondly, consider hiring a midwife. In Germany, it's common to have a midwife who provides prenatal care, assists with the birth, and offers postnatal support. Thirdly, learn about the maternity and paternity leave policies in Germany. The country has generous parental leave policies, allowing parents to take time off work to care for their newborn. Fourthly, if you're not fluent in German, look for English-speaking doctors and midwives. Communication is key during this time, so it's important to find healthcare professionals who can speak your language. Fifthly, start looking for a pediatrician early. It's recommended to choose a pediatrician for your baby before the birth. Sixthly, understand the birth registration process. In Germany, you must register the birth of your child within one week. Lastly, connect with other expat parents. They can provide valuable advice and support, and help you navigate the challenges of having a baby in a foreign country," commented one expat who made the move to Potsdam, Germany.
