What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Castries?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Castries about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Saint Lucia. The island has both public and private healthcare facilities, but the private ones generally offer a higher standard of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Some insurance policies may not cover these, especially if you became pregnant before moving to Saint Lucia. Find a good obstetrician and pediatrician. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. Make sure you understand the process of registering the birth in Saint Lucia. You will need to register the birth at the local registry office in Castries within three months of the birth. If you are not a citizen of Saint Lucia, check the citizenship laws of your home country. Some countries automatically grant citizenship to children born abroad, while others do not. Consider hiring a doula or midwife to assist with the birth. They can provide emotional support and help navigate the healthcare system. Learn about the local customs and traditions related to childbirth. This can help you feel more comfortable and integrated into the community. Finally, make sure you have a support network in place. Having a baby in a foreign country can be challenging, so it's important to have people you can rely on for help and advice," commented one expat who made the move to Castries, Saint Lucia.
