What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Marigot Bay?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Marigot Bay about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Saint Lucia. The island has a mix of public and private healthcare facilities, but the standard may not be as high as in your home country. Therefore, it's advisable to have a comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care and childbirth. Secondly, you should find a reliable obstetrician or midwife early in your pregnancy. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or your local friends. Make sure to communicate your birth plan clearly to your healthcare provider. Thirdly, prenatal care is crucial. Regular check-ups and ultrasounds are necessary to monitor the health of both mother and baby. Ensure you have access to a good pharmacy that stocks prenatal vitamins and other necessary medications. Fourthly, consider the language barrier. If you're not fluent in English or French (the two main languages spoken in Saint Lucia), you might want to find a healthcare provider who speaks your native language to avoid any misunderstandings. Fifthly, plan for the birth. Some expats choose to return to their home country for the birth due to the higher standard of healthcare. If you decide to give birth in Saint Lucia, make sure you're comfortable with the hospital and understand their birthing procedures. Lastly, after the birth, your baby will be eligible for Saint Lucian citizenship. However, if you want your child to have the citizenship of your home country, you should contact your embassy or consulate to understand the process. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with proper planning and preparation, it can also be a rewarding one," said a member in Marigot Bay, Saint Lucia.
