What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Grindavik?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Grindavik about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Icelandic healthcare system. Prenatal care in Iceland is excellent and is provided free of charge to all residents. You should register with a local health clinic as soon as you know you're pregnant. Regular check-ups are important to monitor the health of both the mother and the baby. It's also recommended to take prenatal classes, which are often available in English. These classes can help you understand the birthing process and what to expect when you're in labor. In Iceland, midwives play a crucial role in prenatal care and delivery. You will likely have a midwife rather than a doctor during your delivery unless there are complications. Hospitals in Iceland are well-equipped and staffed with highly trained professionals. However, Grindavik is a small town, so you may need to travel to a larger city like Reykjavik for your delivery. Breastfeeding is highly encouraged in Iceland, and there are numerous resources available to help new mothers with this. Lastly, it's important to understand the parental leave policies in Iceland. Both parents are entitled to a certain amount of leave, which can be taken at any time within the first 18 months after the child's birth. Remember to also register the birth of your child with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure they receive citizenship. It's also a good idea to connect with other expat parents in Iceland. They can provide valuable advice and support, and may be able to recommend English-speaking pediatricians and other resources. Finally, enjoy this special time. Iceland is a wonderful place to raise a child, with a strong emphasis on family and outdoor activities," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Grindavik, Iceland.
