What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Husavik?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Husavik about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Icelandic healthcare system, which is known for its high-quality services. Prenatal care and childbirth are covered by the national health insurance, so make sure you are registered. Secondly, you should find a good midwife or obstetrician. In Iceland, midwives play a significant role in prenatal care and childbirth. They usually speak English, but if you're not comfortable with the language, you can request a translator. Thirdly, consider taking prenatal classes. They are a great way to meet other expectant parents and learn about the birthing process in Iceland. Fourthly, be prepared for the weather. Husavik can be quite cold, especially in winter. Make sure you have appropriate clothing for your baby. Fifthly, understand the cultural norms. In Iceland, it's common for both parents to take parental leave and for fathers to play an active role in childcare. Lastly, make sure you have all the necessary documents for your baby, such as a birth certificate and passport. It's also important to register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate if you want your child to have dual citizenship. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging but rewarding experience. Take the time to enjoy the unique aspects of Icelandic culture and the beautiful surroundings of Husavik," said another expat in Husavik, Iceland.
