What advice do you have for expats having a baby in New Plymouth?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in New Plymouth about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in New Zealand. The country has a high standard of healthcare and maternity services are free for residents and certain permit holders. You should register with a local GP (General Practitioner) as soon as you can. They will be your first point of contact for all health-related issues and can refer you to a specialist if necessary. When you find out you're pregnant, you should get in touch with a midwife as soon as possible. In New Zealand, midwives provide most maternity care, and their services are free. Consider attending antenatal classes. These are a great way to prepare for childbirth and parenthood, and they're also a good opportunity to meet other expectant parents in New Plymouth. If you're planning to give birth in a hospital, the Taranaki Base Hospital in New Plymouth has a maternity unit. It's a good idea to visit the hospital beforehand so you're familiar with the layout and know where to go when the time comes. Remember to apply for a birth certificate for your baby after they're born. This is a straightforward process and can be done online. Finally, make sure you're aware of your rights and entitlements as a parent in New Zealand. The government provides a range of financial support for families, including paid parental leave. In terms of social support, there are numerous parenting groups and resources in New Plymouth that can provide advice and companionship. Don't hesitate to reach out to these communities. Remember to take time to enjoy this special time in your life. New Plymouth is a beautiful city with plenty of parks and outdoor spaces for you and your growing family to enjoy," said a member in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
