What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Roatan?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Roatan if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Roatan, it is considered disrespectful to interrupt or rush a conversation, as locals value taking time to communicate. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, crime, and poverty, as these can be seen as offensive. It's also important not to make assumptions or stereotypes about the local culture or people. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon, especially in rural areas. Dress modestly and respectfully, particularly when visiting religious sites or rural communities. Littering is a serious offense in Roatan, so always dispose of your trash properly. Also, refrain from touching or disturbing the local wildlife, particularly the coral reefs, as they are protected by law. Bargaining is not a common practice in Roatan, so avoid haggling over prices in shops and markets. Lastly, punctuality is not strictly observed in Roatan, so don't be offended if locals are late for appointments or social gatherings," commented one expat who made the move to Roatan, Honduras.
