What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Bishkek?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Bishkek if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"If I have, no one has told me. I learned that you shouldn't sit cross legged if you're a woman. Don't clean the table with a napkin or sit on the corner of a table because it will mean that you are not going to get married," remarked another expat who made the move to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

"It is important to be mindful of cultural norms when visiting Bishkek. It is important to dress modestly and to avoid public displays of affection. It is also important to be respectful of religious customs and to avoid taking photographs of people without their permission. Additionally, it is important to be aware of the local customs and to avoid making jokes about the local culture or people. Finally, it is important to be aware of the local language and to avoid speaking loudly or using offensive language," explained one expat living in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
