What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Kep. They wrote...

"Expats in Kep often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. The majority of locals speak Khmer, and while some may have a basic understanding of English, communication can still be difficult. Another challenge is adapting to the local customs and etiquette. Cambodians are generally very polite and respectful, and there are many social norms that foreigners may not be aware of. For example, it is considered rude to touch someone's head or to point your feet at someone. The pace of life in Kep can also be a challenge for expats. Things tend to move much slower in Cambodia than in Western countries, and this can be frustrating for those who are used to a faster pace of life. Food can also be a challenge for some expats. While Cambodian cuisine is delicious, it can be quite different from what many Westerners are used to. It often includes ingredients like fish sauce, fermented fish paste, and various types of insects. Finally, dealing with the local bureaucracy can be a challenge. Things like getting a driver's license or setting up utilities can be a complicated and time-consuming process," remarked another expat in Cambodia.
