"Expats in Rethymno often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Greek is a difficult language to learn and not everyone in Rethymno speaks English, which can make everyday tasks like shopping or asking for directions difficult. Another challenge is the slower pace of life, which can be frustrating for those used to a faster, more efficient lifestyle. Things in Rethymno often take longer than expected, from getting a repair done to receiving a response to an email. The Greek concept of time, known as "Greek time", can also be a challenge. This refers to the local custom of being late for appointments or events, which can be confusing and frustrating for expats who are not used to it. In addition, some expats may find it difficult to adjust to the local diet, which is heavily based on olive oil, fish, and fresh vegetables. While it is considered one of the healthiest diets in the world, it can be a big change for those used to different cuisines. Lastly, while Greeks are known for their hospitality, it can sometimes be overwhelming for expats. The local culture places a strong emphasis on socializing and community, which can be exhausting for those who value their privacy or are more introverted," wrote a member who made the move to Rethymno, Greece.
