What do expats find most challenging?

Answer this Question

We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Seltjarnarnes. They wrote...

"Expats in Seltjarnarnes often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. Icelandic is a complex language with unique phonetics and grammar rules, making it difficult for foreigners to learn and understand. The weather can also be a significant challenge for expats. The cold, windy, and often unpredictable climate can be a shock for those accustomed to milder or more stable weather conditions. The isolation and remoteness of Iceland can also be a challenge. Seltjarnarnes is a small town, and while it is close to the capital city of Reykjavik, the overall population of Iceland is quite small. This can lead to feelings of isolation or loneliness for some expats. The high cost of living is another challenge. Everything from groceries to housing tends to be more expensive in Iceland compared to many other countries. Finally, the cultural emphasis on independence and self-reliance can be difficult for some expats to adjust to. Icelanders are known for their strong work ethic and often expect the same from others, which can be a challenge for those coming from cultures where there is more emphasis on community support and interdependence," remarked another expat who made the move to Seltjarnarnes, Iceland.
