What do I need to know before moving to Kampong Speu?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Kampong Speu, they said...

"Expats moving to Kampong Speu should be aware that the official language is Khmer, and while English is spoken in some areas, it is not as widely spoken as in larger cities like Phnom Penh. The cost of living is relatively low compared to Western countries, but the standard of living may also be lower, with less access to modern amenities. Healthcare facilities in Kampong Speu are not as advanced as in the West, so expats should ensure they have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation. The climate is tropical, with a rainy season from May to October and a dry season from November to April. The local cuisine is heavily based on rice and fish, and while Western food is available, it may not be as readily accessible. Expats should also be aware of the cultural importance of Buddhism in Cambodia, as it is the dominant religion and influences many aspects of daily life. Safety can be a concern, particularly road safety, as traffic rules are not always adhered to. Expats should also be aware of the risk of landmines in rural areas, a legacy of the country's civil war. Finally, while Cambodia has a growing economy, job opportunities for expats may be limited, particularly in Kampong Speu, which is more rural and less developed than cities like Phnom Penh or Siem Reap," remarked another expat who made the move to Kampong Speu, Cambodia.
