What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Kampong Speu. They wrote...
"Expats in Kampong Speu often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. The majority of locals speak Khmer, and while English is taught in schools, it is not widely spoken, especially among the older population. Another challenge is adapting to the local customs and etiquette. Cambodians are generally very polite and respectful, and there are many social norms that foreigners may not be aware of. For example, it is considered rude to touch someone's head or to point your feet at someone. The pace of life can also be a challenge for expats. Life in Kampong Speu is much slower than in Western countries, and this can be frustrating for those who are used to a fast-paced lifestyle. Food can also be a challenge for some expats. Cambodian cuisine is very different from Western food, and it can take some time to get used to the flavors and ingredients. Finally, the lack of infrastructure and modern amenities can be a challenge for some expats. While Cambodia is developing rapidly, many areas still lack reliable electricity, clean water, and good internet connectivity," wrote a member who made the move to Kampong Speu, Cambodia.
