What do I need to know before moving to Malapascua?

Answer this Question

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Malapascua, they said...

"Malapascua is a small island located in the Visayan Sea, known for its white sandy beaches, clear waters, and diverse marine life. Before moving there, expats should know that the primary language spoken is Cebuano, although English is widely understood and spoken by many locals. The cost of living is relatively low compared to Western countries, but it's important to budget for unexpected expenses. The island is famous for its diving spots, particularly for the chance to see thresher sharks, so diving enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy. However, healthcare facilities on the island are limited, with the nearest hospitals located on the larger island of Cebu. Therefore, it's crucial to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation. The island's infrastructure is not as developed as in larger cities, with power outages being relatively common. Internet connection can also be unreliable, which could be a challenge for those working remotely. Public transportation on the island is limited to motorbikes and small boats, known as 'bangkas'. There are no cars or taxis, so it's important to be comfortable with these modes of transport. The climate is tropical, with high temperatures and humidity year-round, and a rainy season from June to December. Expats should be prepared for this, as well as for the possibility of typhoons. Finally, while Malapascua is generally safe, it's important to be aware of potential risks, such as petty crime and natural disasters, and to take appropriate precautions," said another expat in Malapascua, Philippines.
