Are common prescription medications available in Cairo?

Answer this Question

When we asked expats in Cairo if common prescription medications are available in Cairo, they wrote...

"Most meds are available at the pharmacy and the pharmacists have studied almost as long as doctors, so they can prescribe meds for your case if you can describe what is wrong with you. Good pain killers are difficult if not impossible to get in Egypt. Things like Prozac and sleeping aids are pretty much accessible without prescriptions - especially from small local neighborhood pharmacies. The larger chain pharmacies are more difficult to get things from that are watched at all. ," wrote a member who made the move to Cairo, Egypt.

"Yes, common prescription medications are available in Cairo. The city has numerous pharmacies where you can find a wide range of medications, including antibiotics, pain relievers, and medications for chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Some medications may be available over the counter, while others may require a prescription from a local doctor. It is important to note that the brand names of medications may differ from those in your home country, so it is advisable to know the generic name of the medication you need. Additionally, it is recommended to carry a copy of your prescription and a letter from your doctor explaining your medical condition and the medications you require," explained one expat living in Cairo, Egypt.
