As a foreigner living in Panadura, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Panadura if they have access to public healthcare in Panadura. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"As a foreigner living in Panadura, you will have access to public healthcare, but the quality and availability of services may vary. Public healthcare in Sri Lanka is generally free for all citizens and residents, including foreigners. However, the public healthcare system can be overcrowded, and you may experience long waiting times and limited availability of specialized treatments or advanced medical equipment. In Panadura, you will find public hospitals and clinics, but they may not be as well-equipped or staffed as those in larger cities like Colombo. It is also important to note that while public healthcare is free, you may still need to pay for certain medications or treatments that are not covered by the government. Many foreigners living in Sri Lanka choose to use private healthcare facilities, which offer a higher standard of care and shorter waiting times. Private hospitals and clinics are more expensive than public facilities, but they often have better resources and English-speaking staff. It is recommended that you obtain comprehensive health insurance to cover any medical expenses you may incur while living in Sri Lanka, especially if you plan to use private healthcare facilities," commented one expat who made the move to Panadura, Sri Lanka.
